I live in Fairfax County and I strongly oppose Petition 432.
This petition is not about locker rooms. The Board of Health has no business labeling groups of people harmful based on who they are. The group that put this petition forward is doing so out of animus against the transgender community which is being cruelly attacked nation wide. Actual studies have shown that transgender individuals pose no elevated threat to cis women in locker rooms or bathrooms or other "private" spaces. Cis women are actually more harmed by policies like this than transwomen are as there are more cis women that look like transwomen than transwomen that look like transwomen (recently in Boston, a cis lesbian was removed from a bathroom because she looked too masculine). Proposals like petition #342 serve only to promote cruelty; they do not protect women & they seek to actively harm transgender people which is the only real goal.
There is a nationwide effort by some politicians and interest groups to force transgender people and LGBTQ+ people out of public life. These political attacks harm us all, whether we’re gay or straight, transgender or not, because they foster discrimination and distract us from the real problems we face. Hateful bigotry should not be the driving motivator for any policy regardless of who it targets.
