Action Summary | In order to conform the provisions of Virginia’s voluntary apprenticeship program to federal regulations and to ensure that the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) continues to be recognized as a State Apprenticeship Agency, the General Assembly, in its 2014 Regular Session, passed House Bill 1008 (Acts of Assembly CHAP0734), which amended Code of Virginia §§ 40.1-28.9, 40.1-118 through 40.1-122, 40.1-124, 40.1-125, 54.1-1131, and 58.1-439.6, relating to voluntary apprenticeships. This regulation is required by federal regulation and state law to further conform the provisions of Virginia’s voluntary apprenticeship program to federal regulations and state law and to ensure DOLI’s continued recognition as a State Apprenticeship Agency. The pertinent changes include, transferring powers currently exercised by the Apprenticeship Council to the Commissioner of Labor and Industry, amending references to the Apprenticeship Council to refer to the Commissioner of Labor and Industry, and removing the exemption for apprentices from the Virginia Minimum Wage Act. |
