Action:
Amend 2VAC5-390 to Temporarily Lower the Peanut Seed Germination Rate
Action 2612
General Information
Action Summary |
This action seeks to temporarily reduce the minimum germination rate for peanut seed from 75% to 70% in order to ensure adequate supply of seed for Virginia’s producers for the 2008 growing season. This action is initiated at the request of the State Certified Seed Board.
Unfavorable weather conditions during the 2007 growing and harvesting season adversely affected the germination rate of peanuts produced for seed. Germination tests conducted by the Seed Laboratory in the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services indicate that the amount of seed failing to meet the minimum germination standard established by regulation will result in insufficient seed of certain varieties of Virginia grown peanuts to plant during the 2008 season. This action is necessary to ensure the adequate availability of peanut seed.
