It should recognize that Architects, Engineers, Surveyors are constantly keeping up with basic requirements dictated by the likes of the agencies that review our plans. Those in private practice are educated every day by State and Federal agencies who are constantly striving to improve requirements which are based on the latest studies/improvements to which they are responsible to oversee. Seems to me that in order for a Professional to stay in step with todays requirements and mandates that they have to take it upon themselves to do what they have to do to educate, understand and design per the latest requirements.
Should a certain amount of trust be given to those Professionals who are performing within their individual expertise whereas these individuals are doing what it takes to not be on the receiving end of a lawsuit involving a design blunder? There enlies the incentive for the individual to stay sufficiently educated in the areas where he is interested in performing a professional service. To step out of areas of competency is asking for a lawsuit and/or to explain to DPOR, who can revoke their license, why he was not aware or not keeping pace with todays technology or design mandates. Keeping my E & O Insurance Premiums in check is incentive enough for me to not tread where I am lacking.
Lets keep the CE necessities up to the Professional to select the time, place and subject commensurate to their individual area of expertise. Classes/subjects out of the realm of their individual area of practice is useless. Afterall Professionals should be trusted to do the right thing and to maintain their profession in the best possible standing. It is our livelihood.
