P.E. Continuing Education - In Opposition to Requirements for Continuing Education

I have had to meet contin. educ. requirements of 15 hrs/year for my P.E. in Alabama for 15 years and this is a true burden, I can tell you.  The organizations which have employed me, (state and local governments), do NOT have adequate funding for continuing education for professionals and it is vastly incumbent on the individual to scrounge around to find reasonably priced classes/seminars which many times must be funded by that individual.  Thus, the regulation only forces individuals to fund such endeavors, and not the companies employing them to fund the classes, and these employers should actually be the first and perhaps only true beneficiaries of such continuing education of employed P.E.s.  In general, I can tell you that most classes that I have attended have resulted in zero use in my job performance, sadly.  Yes, it's great to stay "current" in technology, but not when there is not immediate payback/usuage applications in such continuing ed. classes.  I am therefore very much against this mandatory continuing ed. requirement, based on 15 years' experience in having to procure such cont. ed. classes for registration in Alabama as a P.E.

Sincerely, Debra Gillilan, P.E.
