The proposed rule making PE license renewal based on continuing education units is a money making scam and provides little benefit to the working engineer! I have researched the cost of a credit hour and it runs between $25 and $50. So a bi-annual additional cost for keeping my registration (and my job!) is $400 to $800. Most of the states that have this requirement specify a minimum of 15 credits per year, so I am sure the rules will be amended to comply in short order, thus doubling my costs.
I see this as an un-necessary tax that will be used to fund a new industry in Virginia: worthless online courses designed to satisfy administrative requirements. I also noticed that a standard 3 credit university course ($951/$671 Grad/undergrad at ODU) is only worth 15 continuing credits. So an engineer can't even use a course to fulfill the requirement.
The local state PE conventions provide the opportunity for gaining some credits. Gee could this be a ploy to force people to the conventions? If the conventions were currently high enough on the interest scale to warrant the time and expense to attend, you wouldn't need a forcing function. Think about it.
Most of the job skills required for my field are leading edge technology that cannot be enhanced by fundimentals refresher courses.
The only benefit I see from continuing Ed is to keep track of changing requirements from the legal/legislative processes. Personally, I think my registration fees should go toward producing a summary document sent to all PEs periodically by the board.
