As a parent of a transgender student in the public schools of Virginia, I support this policy for many reasons. Primarily because my child has been specifically singled out by a teacher because of a request made to use my child's preferred pronouns. The teacher was instructed by school administration and school board personnel to use the correct pronouns and the teacher refused creating a very unhealthy and potentially dangerous atmosphere for my child. All children should be given the same respect whether transgender,cisgender, or nonbianary. In my child's case, the teacher asserted his religious belief, and stated that it went against what he believed and therefore refused to use the correct pronouns even after a meeting that I had with the teacher prior to the school year begininng. Even after I explained the benefits of using the correct pronouns, in large part, the amount that it can lower suicidal ideation that the child may be experiencing. I do not believe that transgender students should be given over and above treatment to that of their cisgender peers, but I do believe that educators should consider the science that is more than evident and overwhelming and realize that these children have every right to be treated fairly while in the school. The schools have a responsibility to ensure a safe and equitable learning environment for all children.
