PWD certification

To whom it may concern

I am a VA certified Professional Wetland Delineator (No. 10) and a Professional Wetland Scientist. It is my opinion that the Professional Wetland Delineator certification is an important qualification in Virginia, and that the program should be continued.

The program provides the assured base knowledge to allow Corps project managers reliance on wetland delineation reports submitted. With limited project managers in the Norfolk District, reliable information is crucial to processing the number of requests being submitted. Without the certification process, the only assurance the Corps can rely on is experience which puts younger professionals at a distinct disadvantage. In addition, Corps project mangers in different regions may not have experience with consultants in other areas.

The program also provides localities the assurance that project information is accurate. This allows expedited review of project plans and streamlined approval processes.

These are just a couple of important benefits of the program. I would also like to note that while the PWS certification is beneficial to identifying persons with a base knowledge of wetland resources, it is more generic in nature. The PWD is specific to the State and wetland delineation process. It is also backed by both experience and a testing procedure.

Thank you for your consideration. Jamie
