I am writing as a new graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. I am concerned about the lack of clear direction surrounding the new scaling assistant law that took effect July 1st. I am asking the Board of Dentistry to provide more guidance on how this role should be trained and implemented.

I understand that the BOD cannot change the law passed by the General Assembly. However, there should be clear expectations for the education and training required before someone is performing scaling on patients. Allowing each dental office to determine its own training could create major differences in competency and preparation. There needs to be clarification on what additional training would be necessary.

Having just completed the education and clinical requirements to become a dental hygienist, I know how important proper training is when working directly with patients. A full regulatory process is warranted. I hope the BOD will step in to provide the clarity needed to make sure this new role is implemented responsibly and that patients receive the level of care they deserve.
