Comment submitted on behalf of VA's 150+ Montessori programs, and signed on by 30+ program leaders:

Background: Through rigorous coursework closely equivalent to a post-baccalaureate program, Montessori educators study child development as well as curriculum, classroom management, effective instruction, and the other knowledge and skills included in traditional educator preparation. Notably, NAEYC recommends that states recognize Montessori credentialed educators without early childhood degrees as equivalent to the appropriate ECE designation, while the VA DoE currently recognizes Montessori teaching preparation as an alternative pathway to state teacher licensure. Most often, however, Montessori preparation takes place within accredited independent institutions rather than college or university settings. To ensure a pipeline of educators qualified to lead Montessori programs, it is crucial that a Montessori credential be recognized as conferring the appropriate knowledge and skills to qualify one for the position of program director. Therefore, we propose the following amendment:  

Existing Language: A bachelor’s or graduate degree in a child-related degree such as child development, early childhood education, elementary education, recreation, or nursing; and three months programmatic experience;

Recommended Addition: Or, a Montessori credential issued by AMS, AMI, or a MACTE accredited institution, plus a bachelor’s degree in any field; and three months of programmatic experience.
