The menhaden are the primary forage fish in our bay and make up the base of the food chain for most of the other commercial and game species. Allowing a foreign company to harvest vast amounts of this resource is selling out our fisheries resources for a few jobs and limited tax revenues.
Additionally, the bycatch of commercial and game species associated with netting the menhaden is ridiculously high and wasteful of our resources. Having an informal agreement with the Reedville fishers that they will not net near the shore so that people do not see evidence of the wasted bycatch is simply a cover-up, and morally wrong.
Do the right thing, stop commercial menhaden fishing in the Chesapeake!
