Mandatory Continuing Education for Engineers

I am opposed to mandatory continuing education.  We have to read, test and participate in professional conferences in order to stay current and competitive so I do not see the need.  The market will weed out those who do not stay current.  We do not need more gratuitous government oversight to be able to provide top quality service to our customers.  I cannot help but wonder if those who proposed this change have given any statistically relevant consideration to the costs vs benefits.  My guess would be that they have not.
