CE a good idea, but we need autonomy in choosing the CE

Many of my colleagues have spoken on this issue, some for and some against.

The NCEES and other organizations are for the continuing education (CE).  I agree that we should be required to do some level of CE.

As an Engineer working for the Defense Department, my concern is the cost of the CE, the pre-approved listing, and the potential of having to travel back to VA for the classes.  Please approve a broad and liberal policy that allows the Engineer to self certify that the CE “class” benefited them and was useful.  This will allow for reciprocity amongst many states and allow the use of as many companies/course providers as possible.  Allow attendance at ASCE, NSPE, SAME, and other professional organizations to count as a part of the overall CE requirement.  I agree that some form of ethics training is needed, but not necessarily every year or every other year.

If the Board must have an approved list of CE providers, please allow that list to be as open as possible.  Cost is a big issue, as my company does not reimburse me for these classes.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment.

My recommendation would be to look at the surrounding states and adopt similar guidelines.
