Negative Opinion of Continuing Education Requirements

I am presently licensed in 15 states, of which nine require some form of continuing education as a condition of license renewal. Based on this experience, my opinion is that the true value of these requirements is near zero. A fundamental problem is that the CE courses that are available are typically rather general in content in order to be commercially viable. Those of us who have become technical specialists as our careers have progressed (as is my case) have difficulty finding CE courses that offer real educational substance. The true net effect is that compliance with continuing education regulations is just a cost of doing business that offers no meaningful benefit to the health and safety of the general public or improvement to the engineering services that I provide to my clients.
