In Opposition

As a 43-year veteran in the engineering profession, I am opposed to the proposed requirement for continuing education for PEs.  While I am a strong believer in higher education, I do not believe that mandatory college courses will help me in any way.  I believe that , like myself, most serious professional engineers have their own continuing education program consisting of  on-the job learning, active membership in professional societies, and study of trade journals and technical papers.   In fact, most of my knowledge and skills come from my work experience , not from my college education.  I took the PE exam late in my career as a personal challenge and for personal development, not as a erquirement of my employer.   If this requirement is enacted, I am sure that many experienced and competent PEs will not continue their licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
