Objection to Proposal Requiring Continuing Education Credits

This proposal would not benefit the engineering profession.  The only benefactors would be the various agencies that offer this type of continuing education, most at a substantial cost that would have to be paid personally by the engineer.  My guess is this idea came from lobbyists for these contractors or agencies.  I presently reside in a state, SC, that has this requirement.  Approximately once a year, I will attend a course for some work related issue that also offers CE credits.  I have spoken to many PEs in this state that are saddled with this requirement.  I have yet to find one that feels this requirement has in any way made them a better engineer or has helped them maintain their proficiency.  They all feel it is a joke requiring them to just pay hundreds of dollars every year to attend courses with very limited or no benefit to them.  Most of them pay very little attention in the classes and just bring in other work with them.
