| Purpose of the meeting The Board of Health Professions is conducting a study in response to a request from Delegate John O’Bannon into the need to regulate medical laboratory scientists and medical laboratory technicians. A hearing to receive comment is scheduled for July 16, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in Board Room #3. To provide commenters with further background, the draft report “Study of the Need to Regulate Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians” on the research completed, to date, as well as the study’s Workplan are available on the Board’s website (www.dhp.virginia.gov\bhp). Chief issues of interest are the degree of risk of harm from unregulated practice, the costs and benefits of varying levels of regulation, and the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives to regulation.
