Purpose of the meeting
The Virginia Board of Health Professions is authorized by statute to advise the Governor, the General Assembly, and Department of Health Professions' Director on matters related to the regulation or deregulation of health care professions and occupations (see ยง54.1-2510 of the Code of Virginia). The Board, through its Regulatory Research Committee, undertook a study into the need to regulate Surgical Assistants and Surgical Technologists and has concluded that these professions pose a sufficient risk of harm to the public to require regulation. At its November 11, 2009 meeting, the Committee requested staff to develop options for licensing surgical assistants and requiring mandatory certification for surgical technologists. Staff developed four options (see attached) and at the February 9, 2010 meeting the Committee requested public comment on these options. A public hearing to receive comment on the four options will be held on March 31, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 at the following address: Virginia Department of Health Professions 9960 Mayland Drive, 2nd Floor Conference Center Board Room #2 Richmond Virginia 23233-1463 For map and directions, the following link is provided http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/about/directions.htm. Written comment will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on April 16, 2010 and should be sent to Elizabeth A. Carter, Ph.D. at the Virginia Board of Health Professions, 9960 Mayland Drive, Suite 300, Richmond, VA 23233-1463. Comment may also be sent via e-mail to Elizabeth.Carter@dhp.virginia.gov or faxed to (804) 527-4434.
