CE has little value

The Continuing Education (CE) process has become of very little value and solely offers another burden to the already over burdened Engineer.  My experience with CE programs comes by observing some of the other Engineers that I associate with in my home town.  They spend a substantial amount of time finding professional meetings and courses to attend to get “CE credit ".  Unfortunately, many of these events have very little relationship to these Engineers’s current position.  So the event information is quickly forgotten and offers little “true” value.  The local University is a very reputable Engineer Institute; however, the CE "drill" offers them and other local colleges an opportunity to offer that "worthless short course" for CE credit and of course for the University's profit.  Some of my older Engineer friends have allowed their PE to "lapse" rather than have to keep up the CE struggle.  A more valuable approach is to encourage Engineering Advanced degrees, Engineering Short Courses or Engineering Devlopment Programs, like the Technical Fellow.  For example, some colleges offer excellent courses in Systems Engineering or other disciplines.  Many companies now offer Graduate Degree assistance Programs.  This is a much more effective method of “continuing to develop” the Professional Engineering community.
