Oppose PT dry needling: response to Thomas Massie
1. the anatomy training in physical therapy does not justify PT's competency in dry needling. Anatomy training in PT focuses on neuromuscular system. Anatomy, physiology, pathology and management of visceral disorders are largely ignored by PTs. Needling training has never been part of the PT curriculum in professional PT schools. Without appropriate training is the aforementioned aspects, practice of dry needling by PTs poses significant risks for public safety.
2. dry needling is an effective tool; but to be effective and safe, it has to be practiced by competent professionals with sufficient training. PTs with only weekend continuing education courses do not meet the requirement of competent professionals. PTs with incompetent training in practicing dry needling hurts patients.
3. discussions is necessary for expressing concerns regarding patients' safety
4. dry needling is part of acupuncture which is a licensed profession. Without acupuncture license, dry needling practice should be prohibited.
