Keep Foundations of Education

As a new faculty member in the Foundations Department at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Education, I am writing to ask that you keep "Foundations of Education" and not replace it with "the teaching profession." Courses in the foundations of education bring perspective and meaning to the task of teaching and fostering the role of public schools in our U.S. democracy. In fact, the course offerings in the Foundations of Education Department is one of the primary reasons why I was drawn to VCU's School of Education while searching for a faculty position. Furthermore, the study of Foundations of Education plays a key role in the development of reflective, thoroughly professional, and ultimately effective teachers for the Commonwealth because it places day-to-day classroom practice within wider contexts, providing time and space for consideration of the overall aims of education, including education's role in supporting freedom of thought, social fairness, care for others, and democratic self-government, to name a few. For these reasons and many more, I ask that you keep Foundations of Education as a key course offered in Virginia.
