This legislation needs to be repealed. As many others have stated, the targeted clinics provide many other services besides abortions that are important for the reproductive health of the women they serve, many of whom struggle to afford basic medical care. Abortions performed in these facilities are outpatient procedures. The standards set forth in this legislation are excessive, and abortion providers should not be forced to close their doors if they fail to meet these new requirements. If these amendments were so important to public safety, then all outpatient surgery facilities would be targeted (ie: oral surgeons, ophthalmic surgeons); however, they are not. If this legislation is not repealed, then existing clinics should be grandfathered in, so that women's healthcare in the State of Virginia will not suffer. As a resident and practicing medical professional in the state of Virginia, I am embarrassed that this piece of legislation has made it this far. Women should not still have to be fighting for access to something that is a constitutional right.
