With harmful workforce shortages in behavioral health and substance abuse/addiction, it is vital that Virginia not overlook a key treatment modality - Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Behavior analysts have been treating substance abuse and addiction for decades, most notably with our understanding of delay discounting and use of contingency management. For more information go to https://www.bacb.com/wp-content/uploads/Behavioral-Treatment-of-Substance-Use-Disorders-Fact-Sheet_190520.pdf. The BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) certifies behavior analysts (BCBAs and BCaBAs) all over the world. Contact the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis (VABA) admin@virginiaaba.org for additional resources beyond that fact sheet. In Virginia, behavior analysts are licensed by the Board of Medicine (LBAs and LABAs) and there are currently over 1000 and growing. Include these licensed professionals as providers for treatment of substance abuse and addiction.
