I believe a pet owner must be informed when their animal will be operated on, or receive any proceedure that would be performed by a licensed practicing veterinary physician, that the prectitioner is a medical student.  I also believe that a licensed veterinary medical doctor must be present if a medical student is performing a surgery or proceedure.
