Supervision of LVT Preceptors and Technician Students

SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO LVT - Technician Program Students.   I feel that there is not enough hands on skill testing and training in our current LVT training programs due to strict curriculum requirements and time limitations to perfect a student for actual veterinary practice situations.     If "Technician" students are to receive hands on "real Life" experience they must be allowed to practice “learned" skills UNDER supervision from a LVT and or DVM/VMD in a professional setting.  This situation could include the current ON-LINE students and the preceptorships required prior to graduation.   Students must be supervised constantly and their mentors held accountable for their actions.   Learning and perfecting hands on skills such as IV Cath placement, Surgical Assisting, Anesthesia motoring and dose calculations will allow the students to continue to grow as professionals and acquire the skill and discipline to become a trusted team member.   Delegation is how we grow our practices, and under the proper supervision our students can take on responsibility and continue to validate credibility on our field.   NEVER should a student be unsupervised at anytime or allowed to make a decision without consultation with his qualified mentor.   Facilities could post a detailed public notice explaining this mentoring relationship on their medical forms that they are a teaching facility with students being supervised at all times. clients could initial that statement as informed consent.   Perhaps a provisional licensing program could be enabled to monitor the progress of individuals... to practice.  Once they have passed all tests and requirements the licence looses restrictions...  like a learners permit.  (just a concept).
