In full support

Just over 3 years ago, I moved to the D/M/V area from Texas. In Texas, I was a fully licensed LPC and moved to the D/M/V because of my husband's job and my getting into a dotoral program. I also had the opportunity upon moving up here to work at one of the most well known institutes for play therapy and trauma in the country. I transferred my license to DC, but needed to work in Virginia. It took 3 years to finally be recognized in the state of Virignia due to differences in hour requirements, differences in what counted toward education hours, and differences in training between Texas and Virginia. However, Texas has very high hours and training requirements and it felt arbitrary at times as to what counted in Texas that didn't in Virginia. It felt so silly to drive 11 miles from my doc program in DC to my workplace in Fairfax and suddenly no longer be recognized as a licensed progessional counselor. Further, our lack of portability in licensure I believe discredits us as a profession. As Virginia was the first to license LPC's, I hope they too can be the first to finally tackle the issue of portability.
