When directly supervised by a LVT or veterinarian, allowing non-licensed technicians to place catheters is a huge asset to patient care. I have worked places where no one can get a IVC in a patient that is really suffering except for the non-licensed technician. Also, when supervised, this is a fantastic way for assistants to learn and become interested in going to school to become an LVT and joining a field where demand is high. There is little risk involved in placing an IVC in a peripheral vein when an LVT or veterinarian is supervising for sterility, technique, etc.
