As nurses we work hard to protect the privacy of our patients but our privacy is important as well. Mental health nurses are not required to display their full name, I believe we should all have this priveledge since mentally ill patients are found in all sectors of nursing. Mentally ill patients are commonplace on the Med Surg floor where I work.  It is unethical for us to search patients on social media. The same should be true for us.  So, it can be disturbing to go on a lunch break and check my phone for messages, only to find a patient has tried to "friend" me on Facebook.  While we can not control the internet behavior of our patients we should be able to take steps to protect ourselves and our families by not displaying our last name.
