Trigger Point Dry Needling - Safe and Effective

It is clear that the majority of the opposition to physical therapists (PT's) performing trigger point dry needling (TPDN) is from accupuncturists.  This is unfortunate and misguided.  It must be emphasized that physical therapists who perform TPDN are NOT performing accupuncture.  TPDN is applied to active neuro-muscular trigger points as directed by palpation and skilled hands-on care.  PT's are highly trained and educated medical professionals who specialize in evaluating and treating the Neurological, Muscular and Skeletal movement disorders.  PT intervention includes patient education, soft tissue and joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise, functional training and the use of modalities to relieve pain and to restore function.  TPDN in only one such modality utilized by PT's to evaluate, treat and manage functional impairment and pain.

The recent Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy study (July 10, 2015) found that eighty-six perceent (86%) of the knowledge and skills required to perform Trigger Point Dry Needling is obtained in the entry level education of Physical Therapists.  The fifty-four (54) hours of additional post graduate training that is currently required fulfils the remaining education needed to obtain certification and to practice safely and effectively.

Furthermore, physical therapists are integral medical team members who work closely with physicians and other health care practitioners to provide proactive and preventative patient care.  TPDN should be included in the PT scope of practice in Virginia as an option to enhance the quality of life for our patients.
