While I'm generally in favor of giving students in the veterinary medical field as much hands-on experience as possible during all stages of their training, I do believe that it's essential that a) clear, enforceable standards are maintained as to what procedures, specifically, students in each stage are allowed to practice, b) clear, enforceable standards are also maintained for the veterinarians who are supervising the students, c) students are always under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian and d) owner consent is required prior to any student practicing any kind of procedure on the owner's animal.
