It is very important that you understand that our pets are members of our family.  We want (and have the right) to know exactly what will be done and who will be doing any surgical procedure to our pet. If it is to be done by a student we want an accredited doctor overseeing it and we want to be given the knowledge to make decisions regarding the situation beforehand.   This is what you would hope to have before making any decision regarding your loved ones.
