The statutes and regulations of Virginia already state that the licensed veterinarian is to provide “immediate and direct supervision” to licensed technicians and assistants, and specifically “on-premises” supervision of externs or preceptees. These laws are adequate protection for the public and their animals.  Licensed veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians care deeply about providing high quality care to their patients, and keep their patients’ best interests in mind at all times. Mandating written consent for any patient handling by a veterinary or veterinary technology student is such a paperwork nightmare that it could actively discourage licensed veterinarians from mentoring students, externs or preceptees to the point of impairing their educations, which could impact future patient care.  Please do not place this large, unnecessary burden on our veterinary community.
