I would not want a medical student operating on me without an attending surgeon present in case of an emergency.  While I completely support full access to education and I respect the value of experience, I also think that a pet is a member of the family and family members deserve the best possible treatment with supervision of an experienced practitioner.  

No pet should be operated on without the full knowledge and consent of the "owner."
