Commenter: Mental Health Worker

More accountability is key

I have worked in the mental health field as a support worker for over five years. In that time, I have experienced almost every facet of the job. The main thing that I have taken away from it all is the simple fact that these services are necessary. Without the services I, my co-workers, and my agency provide, along with countless other agencies, most of our clients would struggle to cope and be unable to appropriately interact in soicety. Many of them would doubtless end up repeatedly hospitalzied or in jail, which would ultimately cost far more. I am fully aware, of course, that fraud exists within the system. I am lucky enough to work for an agency with high integrity and core ethical values. But I recognize that not all agencies work like this. As such, it would seem to me to make far more sense to enforce the rules and standards that already exist instead of making it even harder for our clients. What is being proposed is a violation of their human rights. Instead, I suggest that agencies be held accountable for their behavior. Don't hurt those that need and benefit from our services because of a certain few unethical providers.
