carry law in federal/state forests in VA

I strongly encourage and endorse the right of American citizens to carry protective firepower within the boundaries of both state and federal outdoor properties. Whether people are hiking, camping, doing photography, or just spending a few hours or minutes exploring or examining a particular site, they should be allowed to have effective weapons, ready for instant employment, to protect themselves from predators, be they animal or human. There is ample history of people being attacked by many kinds of animals and being attacked or threatened by other people. The second amendment allows American Citizens to bear arms. Why does the Federal or State government think it has the right to restrict that Constitutional right? I am all for specific restrictions on the discharge of firearms on such property as we are discussing and for restricting hunting; but self defense is not among those restrictions.
