Purpose of the meeting
The Atlantic Flyway Council is an organization composed of the Directors of the seventeen Atlantic states, seven Canadian Provinces and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The Council’s primary responsibility is the sound stewardship of the waterfowl and other migratory birds in the Atlantic Flyway. The Council serves in an advisory capacity to state and provincial wildlife departments and to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Canadian Wildlife Service. During the summer meeting technical experts from the states, provinces and the Fish and Wildlife Service meet to review waterfowl population status reports and other pertinent projects that formulate recommendations on seasons and bag limits that are then passed on to the Flyway Council for consideration. The Council then makes their recommendations to the Fish and Wildlife Service where recommendations from all four flyways are reviewed and acted upon. Basically this is where the season frameworks are generated. The Technical Section of the Atlantic Flyway Council will meet on July 16-18 and the Council on the 19th and 20th.
