Dry needling is simply trigger point acupuncture. Licensed acupuncturists receive between 2700 and 3400 hours of graduate-level training and go through rigorous national board and state exams to practice acupuncture safely, properly, and legally. So why should a physical therapist be allowed to practice acupuncture with a fraction of the training? This is not only unethical to their acupuncture colleagues but more importantly, to their patients. Telling patients dry needling is different from acupuncture is also unethical.
I have a great deal of respect for my physical therapist colleagues and gladly refer my patients to them when they need skilled rehab. I would ask the same in return -- if a patient needs acupuncture, refer them to a licensed acupuncturist. Let's all stick to what we do best.
