It has come to my attention that shackles are kept on pregnant women even during childbirth. I do have sympathy for the lot of deputies and correction officers who often have thankless tasks to perform. In the instance of women in labor or in the advanced stages of pregnancy, I think that the risks to the unborn child far outweigh the needs for order in the care of inmates in the institution.
I ask for a revision of directives and practices regarding the mothers of unborn children and their shackling. I thank those who perform the tasks of keeping order in the state and local corrections facilities.
