As a student I am inexperienced when it comes to a large portion of the world. Education was created to serve the purpose of creating a safe and trusted environment to present difficult, new, and controversial topics. A school has the obligation to its public to provide guidance and understanding in the interpretation of new information. However, if a student is to succeed in the understanding of the world around them they must first encounter difficult topics that must be well thought out before an idea may be thoroughly composed. Limiting an educational body’s ability to perform its directive of educating and guiding the future is effectively shooting it in the foot and asking it to walk straight. The development of a people into a thinking and understanding unit requires knowledge to be taught and understood. Censorship to any degree within an educational system restricts upon the development of its students and hinders future progress.

Objectionable material, while objectionable for reasons, still must be explored and understood by some. I agree that parents and guardians should be able to regulate what a student under the age of adulthood is exposed to, as that is their right as a parent. But when the lack of understanding becomes absolute for even those students whose parents would not object to such material, then the system is flawed and those in pursuit of information are forced to remain ignorant.

Censorship to any degree within a system whose purpose it is to educate is detrimental to that purpose. Consent of individuals involved in the introduction of objectionable material should be observed, however it must also be understood that a school was made for the purpose of education and should be allowed to dictate to some degree what information its students receive. Educational services should not be governed by parents, they should be governed by qualified educated individuals whose goal in life is to enlighten the future and preserve the vast quantity of knowledge human kind has attained. Any restriction to informations distributed within a school disables that institutions ability to perform its prerogative.
