This wonderful addition to the Regulatory Code finally gives the individual Parent the right to prevent his children from having to read material that he finds objectionable. It in no way restricts the teacher's choice of materials for the rest of the class, or requires the teacher to submit special lists to the parents beyond the normal high school syllabus.

There can only be praise for the carload of parents who drove from Fairfax County to the October Board of Education meeting to comment on the verbal pornography required reading for their teen-agers. They certainly reinforced the diligent work of the Department of Education in defining the problem and proposing a solution.

In addition to sexual material many parents also object to political and scientific controversy that is presented as fact, They now may ask for alternative materials which give opposing views on climate change, renewable energy or human evolution.

It is  weird, to say the least, that the first 97 comments on this proposal came in the first 2 days of the comment period and were all from teachers including those from out of state. It looks as if there were a concerted effort by the teachers' union to undermine the legitimate concerns of parents and due diligence from the State Department of Education.
