I am a former EMT-B out of Station 8, Bent Mountain.  It is not unusual for EMS to arrive at a scene before law enforcement arrives.  To EMS, if will be an accident or incident scene, but in no time, an EMT can recognize it as a crime scene, placing EMTs at risk.  Examples are DUI accidents and domestic violence.  Even scenes that are initialy called in as "gunshot" or "suicide".  I think EMTs who wish to carry on duty should be properly trained by qualified personnel in the proper use of deadly force.  While an EMT is on scene to help save lives, he or she is also admonished in their current training to keep themselves safe and not take risks, as if they go down, the prospect of  saving lives diminishes.
