Please do not adopt the new regulations.

Please do not adopt the new regulations. During this time of extreme accountability we must be diligent concerning the education of all students, including gifted students.

The proposed changes to 8VAC20-40-55 would require local plans to be submitted annually to the local school board. This is detrimental for several reasons:
·         Removing the DOE from the approval process will create programming inconsistencies for gifted students throughout the state.
·         Gifted advisory committees in each division are charged with creating five-year plans that allow time to implement, monitor, and adjust goals for local gifted programs. It would not be productive for divisions to create an annual plan.

The proposed change to 8VAC20-40-70 would repeal funding for gifted education. Please reinstate the following statement: “State funds administered by the Department of Education for the education of gifted students shall be used to support only those activities identified in the school division’s plan as approved by the Board of Education.”
