I’m genuinely confused by the outpouring of indignation about children being FORCED to switch genders, since that is not what’s happening?
This is about protecting and supporting children who identify as trans or non binary. It is not about stripping away parental rights, or forcing/encouraging children to change genders. LGBTQ+ youth experience disproportionately high levels of bullying and depression specifically because they often have no support. Many people seem to think that this is a “choice” (it isn’t) for trans kids. If that’s the case, then obviously you should support putting an infrastructure in place with counseling and resources that allow a child to understand and make informed decisions about what they’re experiencing. Again, these are children. Sad to see that so many people’s bigotry is so deeply ingrained that they’re willing to allow a child to suffer, rather than attempt any modicum of understanding.
That said, trained staff should be handling these matters, not teachers who are already overworked and underpaid.
