Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

STRONGLY SUPPORT

I graduated from the Virginia public school system, and I feel that Virginia has some of the best public schools in the country. However, I was only able to learn and grow and succeed because I felt safe, welcomed, and valued in my school environment. I STRONGLY SUPPORT these policy recommendations because they will provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for ALL students, including and especially LGBTQ+ youth. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ youth face a higher rate of bullying, and are at higher odds for depression and suicidality -- this is something that educators and school staff (nurses, counselors, administrators, etc.) must be prepared to address, and such training will benefit ALL students regardless of whether they are LGBTQ+. These policy recommendations directly address the need for education and training for educators and school staff around these issues, and for that reason I strongly support them. Please do not let students go uncared-for; ALL students, including LGBTQ+ ones, deserve a safe and welcoming school environment in which to learn.
