I strongly oppose the guidelines proposed by the Virginia Department of Education. These guidelines are based on the fundamentally flawed assumption that feelings trump the facts of DNA. These guidelines are simply and attempt to codify ultra-progressive dogma and use public education as its indoctrination tool. The percentage of children legitimately experiencing gender dysphoria is incredibly low, less than 2%. To subject over 98% of a student population and their staff, teachers, and administrators to the rules proposed is a severe trampling of freedom, to say nothing of setting up educational authorities as the ultimate authority over that of parents responsible for the raising of their children. These rules will ensure that school systems will spend scarce time and resources on a radical social engineering concept that will adversely affect the actual learning that needs to take place in our public schools. I would not send my children to a public school where these rules were in place, nor would I teach in one of them. This is all bad social science run amok and further erode support of public education. Our public schools have an enormous challenge on their hands catching up with the effects of Covid-19 on the education of this generation and should have these added burdens laid on them.
