Continuing Education Requirements

The majority of states now require some form of continuing education. The continuing education industry has now grown to be a sizeable industry in it's own right, some good, some bad and many others marginal. I am inundated weekly with flyers and brochures promoting courses for a fee. Many of these courses are ethics courses or the like which are good in their own right but don't necessarily improve your engineering skills. Any t ype of continuing education program must be thought about carefully and not put an undue monetary or time strain on the individual. During these times, most engineers are working overtime just to keep up with the project schedules. Also, to require that engineers take one or two college courses a year is a real burden and not realistic for the average person. There are on-line courses that may offer in the future the best of both worlds.  I favor some form of continuing education, but I ask that the governing board think about the requirements carefully and think in terms of what will benefit the individual and the public without putting a significant strain on resources. I think there is a lot of improvement that can currently be done with many of the state's requirements.
