Continuing Education implicit in accepting License

As a PE (Environmental), I accepted an implicit requirement to continue my professional education, and do so constantly.  It is the only way one can maintain currency and relevance in the professional world.  Much of that education, however, is not formal and I truly pity anyone assigned to review and evaluate it's quality.  I must constantly be on the lookout for advances in technologies and methods, as well as review information on existing materials to assure they are still relevant and applicable before I utilize them.  What is the "credit" value of that?  We convene and share information in many forums (conferences, Seminars, etc) with numerous breakout session and informal gatherings and discussions from which we all learn and improve as professionals.  Must each presentation, breakout session or other formal gathering be evaluated for "credit" value?  What is the "credit" value of meeting informally with my peers to discuss and analyze innovative approaches to resolution of an engineering problem?  I can guarantee I always learn much from these gatherings, but sincerely doubt that can be efficiently or effectively quantified with a "credit" value.

Again, as professionals, we recognize and accept the responsibility to continue our education.  I see little value and many headaches in formalizing such a requirement.
