Monuments to our shared past

WIth the understanding that monumnets to the Confederacy may have a dark past, removing monumetns is not the answer to our present troubles.  Removing them will not remove the past or earas it.  We must look at the full context of when they were put up and not just part of it.  Yes there is a correlation between when many were put up and when the era of Jim Crow commenced.  But correlation does not mean causation.  Many monuments to the Union were also put up at the same time.   What we need is an expansion of public monumnets to our shared past.  Monuments that tell the full story side by side.  These monuments were put up mostly through private donations.  Now we are proposing to remove them at public expense... public money that would better serve the public good by being put into public educaiton and the inclusion of other voices that have not been heard.
