Dry Needling is not accupuncture

Physical Therapists using dry needling techniques share only one thing with accupuncturists.  The needle.  For accupuncture practitioners to suggest that PT's are claiming they know all of "The Points" in 54 hrs is sad to read.  We do not know the points and we do not intend to learn them.  We leave that to the accupuncture practitioners.  We look for, and are expert in, locating myofascial trigger points.  This is what we treat.  Myofascial trigger points.  And there is an abundance of literature demonstrating the efficacy of this treatment and describing the anatomical and physiological nature of what is happening.  Our PT training involves hundreds and hundreds of credit hrs of training.  We are trained far beyond the scope of using a filiform needle.  I think there is room for both of our professions to use a needle in our clinics and I think we can work in harmony.  Dry needling yields almost unbelievable results in the clinic and I will fight for my right as a PT to use this modality.
