TRAP Laws

I find it outrageous that my state is taking a step backwards for women's health, and claiming that it is in the name of health and safety.  If you do just a little research you will find that first trimester abortions have been safely performed in out-patient clinics for decades - I know, because I had one as a teenager over thirty years ago.  By passing laws that will close-down safe and needed facilities, you are discriminating against poor women in some parts of the state, who will not have the time or the money to travel to a facility that can address their needs.  You are unecessarily risking their health, because they will not get other health care they need, and may search for other, more dangerous ways to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.  Perhaps this is what some people want, to try to control other women's lives and bodies, but the Supreme Court has ruled that unconstitutional.  These laws will also interfere with the livelihoods of many conscientious, hard-working doctors and nurses, who are on the front lines of women's healthcare every day.  If they cannot afford the costly, unnecessary renovations to their facilities, they will no longer provide their valuable services in our state.  Sadly, many of them may take their services to another state, impacting Virginia's economy as well.

It is time for the elected officials of Virginia to see through this smoke screen, and study the statistics about various kinds of health care facilities.  They will find that this effort is not about safety at all, but rather about one group forcing its beliefs on another.
